Exhibition Statement
Vesselbeams, Matthew Bennett Laurents’ third solo exhibition at Carnation Contemporary, features an installation of an ongoing series of coil-built ceramic vessels. Working in a process that emphasizes immediacy and intuitive mark-making, Laurents’ vessels are individual explorations of form, color, texture and scale. Each is an idiosyncratic articulation, speaking in the language of utility, pattern and figurative sculpture.Matthew Bennett Laurents (b. 1990) is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in ceramics. Drawing on histories of craft and ritual, his work explores the potential of objects as vessels for spiritual and emotional energy. He graduated with an MFA in Ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BA in Studio Art from Lewis & Clark College; he lives and works in Portland, OR.
