EXHIBITION

The term other has historically been used to speak of separation, strangeness, and even inferiority. Other can also refer to the unconventional or revolutionary. Otherworlds features installation, sculpture, diorama, painting, printmaking, and costuming from the Gather:Make:Shelter (GMS) Collective - a group of artists with lived experience of houselessness and poverty.

Expressing their visions for worlds that exist beyond our current reality, GMS artists share inner workings, imaginary dreamscapes, avatars, and other possibilities made manifest. Though their voices are unique, these artists share a reverence for material and the handmade. The conservation of supplies, identity reinvention, found objects, mark-making, and economy of effort seen across the works speaks to the providence of artists touched by housing insecurity.

Presenting artwork from Aileen McPherson, Fahd Sadiq, Fawn, Gloria Rodriguez, Mia Winters, Marzipan Lee, and Zenyatta, Otherworlds honors joy and beauty fortified by lived experience.

Gather:Make:Shelter was founded in 2017 to create a collaborative model of engagement connecting people experiencing houselessness and poverty to creative opportunities. Through arts workshops and mentorship, Gather:Make:Shelter empowers participants to forge creative paths to stability and community.
