EXHIBITION

Coined by physicist/futurist Herman Kahn, "My eyes glaze over" describes an instinctive response to feeling overwhelmed about the future.

In his upcoming solo show at Carnation Contemporary, Jeremy Rotsztain continues his explorations of abstraction using new technologies, creating lenticular images that represent various states of drifting attention, disengaged staring, and zoning out.

The works in "My Eyes Glaze Over" can be approached like analog screens; screens that invite a range of states from meditative to spaced out to overwhelmed. These works were composed with an all-over technique commonly found in Abstract Expressionist painting. Jeremy expands all-overness into three dimensions, crafting computer algorithms to fill the 3D volume of his screens and drawing others by hand. These gestural marks are both a vehicle for moving color through space and for guiding viewers’ drifting gazes through those spaces.

ARTIST

Jeremy Rotsztain (b. Toronto, Canada) explores contemporary abstraction using code and computer graphics. His work manifests as augmented & virtual reality experiences, lenticular images and 3D animations. His projects often engage with the physical environments that they're presented in, playing with history, experience of space and color. His work is typically slow in nature, visceral and involves collaborations with electronic musicians. Jeremy's work has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally, including at Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, Zentrum für Kunst und Medien, Geneva International Film Festival and MUTEK. He lives in Portland, Oregon.
