“You’re not something that is a sort of puppet on the end of the process.  You are still the process. You are the big bang, the original force of the universe, coming on as whoever you are.”
-Alan Watts

In Faceland, a solo exhibition of new paintings, ceramic sculpture and works on paper, Matt Bennett Laurents employs various mediums and techniques to explore the nature of primal emotional experience and reverie.  Embracing a process of spontaneous action and instinct, forms emerge from a realm without language; symbols arrive through free association; faces appear in the ether. Images begin with automatic drawing and develop, being worked, reworked, and reiterated. Repetition, layering, and bold use of color evoke energetic fields and elemental forces.  Through communication with the subconscious, the objects of Faceland reflect encounters with an inner world; they are a succession of imaginations pointing toward a landscape of fluctuating vibration and change.
